Well, had it been a foreshock to a larger quake, windows could have popped out of the building, severely injuring or killing those outside. (We're in a 10-story building, but we're right next to a 30-story building). There were many injuries (and some deaths, I believe) in the '89 quake in SF attributed to falling glass.

If the building was built in the last 12 years or so,(like ours was) you're way safer staying inside unless there's evidence of damage, or other immediate danger. Even in older buildings, if you're in or around high-rises, you're better off staying inside.
