As much as things change, they stay the same
21st Century:

Pope: Gay marriage is 'evil'

ROME, Italy (Reuters) -- Homosexual marriages are part of "a new ideology of evil" that is insidiously threatening society, Pope John Paul says in his newly published book. (article)

18th Century:

"In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own." —Thomas Jefferson

"What influence in fact have Christian ecclesiastical establishments had on civil society? In many instances they have been upholding the thrones of political tyranny. In no instance have they been seen as the guardians of the liberties of the people. Rulers who wished to subvert the public liberty have found in the clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate liberty, does not need the clergy." —James Madison

The attribution I have for the first is from Thomas Jefferson, letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814.

The second was attributed to James Madison, but I didn't record any other detail on that one.

I recorded them a while back from a variety of sources. I kind of collect interesting quotes as I run across them (strange hobby, I know).

I didn't keep that much detail on it in my little online file. In most cases I found the same quote on a number of sites (or on one particularly trustworthy site). I didn't trust quotes I could only find one or two random sites.

..found them researching some of the historical basis for the seperation of church & state a while back one of the times the fundies were trying to argue it was a recent argument and there was no basis for it (gotta love how they try to rewrite history).

lol I'm a bit of a collector. I keep interesting quotes stored in my yahoo. Seeing the Pope's statements and the unfortunate impact they have on people implementing public policy reminded me of these (and a few others).

i thought europeans were more open to homosexuality... but then again, this is the pope we're talking about.

Does anyone really think the Pope in all his mumbling frailty and public appearances as a slumping slug-like Jabba the Hutt enable him to actually write a book?
I guess they think the public could fall for it, after all they do believe in L.Ron Hubbard...oh, well.
