That can't be right...
Is the Mini's clutch supposed to honk at me when I release it and the car smell like a fried CPU when I stop?

Thats a negatory. Have you been letting the clutch all the way out when driving?

well, mostly. but i've been fine-tuning the use of it half way / ¼ depressed when in bumper-to-bumper traffic so I don't propel myself into the car in front of me's bumper when we're only going like 5 mph.

I've also been trying to use the dead pedal more so I don't hover my foot over the clutch as much. I'm much better at taking off fast and actually moving than stuck in traffic. I don't care much for first gear.

No, the purpose of a clutch is allow you to ease the transition from not moving to moving, so easing the pedal in and out slowly for a limited amount of time is fine, like when you're in traffic. The problem is when your cruising at, say, 20 mph or faster with the clutch halfway down for like minutes or hours. That would be like buttsecs with an ultra-ribbed condom and zero lube (not that I'm speaking from experience or anything :)).

yeah, I'm going to howstuffworks. I think this will all make sense when I figure out what the stupid thing is supposed to do anyway.

I still think the transmission can be replaced by a small shell script.

drive!

stupid manual transmission. if god had intended us to drive like this, he wouldn't have given us the letter "D".

You mean, god wouldn't have given us the word "PRNDL" (which, incidentally, is defined on Urban Dictionary).

LOL I feel bad for the next person to rent that car.

It sounds like your clutch is being raped and worn down faster than a 19 yo prison inmate.

well, they need better error trapping.

They do, it's called an automatic transmission. :0) You shouldn't drive without it.

All cars smell like fried CPU when you stop...on a race track. I think you're having more fun in the MINI than you're willing to admit. That is what I choose to believe anyway.

Mmmm.... burnt clutch. That's what the Matterhorn smelled like at Disneyland when it broke down with us on it a few weeks ago. That is always a bad, bad thing.

It stopped today. I'm hoping it's okay. I'm keeping my foot on the dead pedal to make sure I'm not accidentally pressing it down or something (stupid gravity).

Riding the clutch is a bad habit for those that are new to a stick, along with accidentally starting in 3rd (I did that a lot when I was 16)... You've been driving it for this long without a problem - you'll be fine - just relax and have a little fun with it! This is the best time to learn since it's not yours, so who cares if you screw it up? :D

I've gotten surprisingly good at starting from 2nd when I'm just sick of changing gears repeatedly. lol

3rd's a bit more challenging. Car no likie.

Heh - I did that all the time. That and skipped gears... 1-2-4... 1-2-3-5... 1-2-5... In the Passat that I had this summer in the UK, I shifted without using the clutch from time to time too... 3-4 and 5-6 in particular...

God I miss driving a stick...

I'm no vehicular expert, but if your car smells like fried anything you have a problem.

the smell of burnt popcorn means the clutch plates aren't fitting together properly. the asbestos in them are causing the burning smell.

yikes! i only caused mine to do that once by down shifting too hard. but i can't imagine what would cause the situation you were talking about in you later post.

fire retardnt
correct me if i am wrong, but in manual tranmissions, they use a non powedry product, similar to sandpaper in look.

it's not as easily inhaled. the burnt smell has less than 2% quantity of asbestos.

forgive me, as my bio-chem is a little lacking, but rest assured. what you inhaled was negligible. no worries for you. only the transmission.
